Sarmentero - Ribera del Duero

The Sarmentero property was acquired in 1942 and originally dedicated to the production of tiles, cattle breeding, wheat, barley, and personal wine production. Amparo Repiso, fourth generation winemaker, decided to go further with her dream and start her own winery in 2004.  She was one of the first female winemakers in Ribera del Duero and began with just one 60-gallon barrel of wine. Her wine was so well received that she decided to keep going and has been slowly increasing production little by little. Now Amparo is joined by her daughter, María López Repiso, and together they produce the purest expression of their terroir, through natural fermentations and little to no additions.

Sarmentero Thanos 2025

100% Tempranillo from organic grapes planted at 800-900 meters from the Pago de Oyales (planted 1996/5 ha) and Peñuelas (planted 2002/2 ha) vineyards.

Winemaking:   Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel with ~40% natural carbonic maceration because grapes are not crushed and left untouched going into the tank.  No protein agents are added to the fining process and only a very soft filter is used to preserve the essence of the vineyards.  Low total SO2 (30-40 mg/L).

The 2025 Thanos is 100% Tempranillo from Quintanilla de Arriba, Ribera del Duero. Soft floral notes, fresh plum and cherry aromas lead into a palate with light chalky texture, direct flavor and lingering fruit. An interesting profile for Ribera, less compact than usual yet still energetic.

Issue Date: September 2026

The 2021 Tempranillo Vendimia Seleccionada comes from Quintanilla de Arriba, Ribera del Duero, aged 12 months in French oak barrels. Slightly open in its aging profile, it offers oak, sun-dried canvas, balsamic herbs and orange peel. The palate is dry, with tight tannins and a mildly drying edge; it remains compact, with chalky notes through the mid-palate. A well-made wine in a slightly brutalist style.

Tim Atkin 91:  Bodega Sarmentero Thanos 2024

Just the kind of Tempranillo you want to drink if you're out on a tapas tour in Valladolid or Aranda de Duero, Amparo Repiso's medium-bodied red uses grapes from clay and limestone soils in Oyales. Entirely unwooded, it has palate-caressing tannins, bramble and blueberry fruit flavours and a chalky undertone.  2025-29
