Casa Beade (Adega Beade in Galician) is produced by Jose Luis Beade, who learned winemaking from his grandfather and later Jose Luis Mateos of Quinta de Muradella. He farms 6 acres divided into 22 plots (!) in cold, wet Betanzos, the northernmost traditional grape growing region of Spain. Jose Luis crafts extremely limited, pure, austere examples of the local grapes. He is working to revive viticulture in this exceptional wine growing region, where only 75 acres remain of the 2,500 that existed in the 18th century.

The white blend 2019 Ribeiras de Armea Branco Lexítimo Agudelo was produced with grapes from the different plots they work in Betanzos and Paderne—85% Branco Lexítimo (Albarín) and 15% Agudelo (Chenin Blanc) on clay and schist soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in used 500- and 600-liter oak barrels and matured in a combination of stainless steel and barrel. It has a yeasty nose with reminiscences of chicken broth that give it a savory twist. It has 13.2% alcohol, quite ripe for the zone, and has retained very good acidity and freshness. It has pungent flavors and a vibrant palate with citrus acidity. 1,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2020.

The white 2018 Ribeiras de Armea is a blend of Branco Lexítimo with 20% Godello, and it has some notes of creamy oak and cured meat, a smoky touch that is quite unusual but seems to be part of the character of Branco Lexítimo. It has ripeness without excess and nice freshness. Sixty percent of the volume fermented in oak, a used 225-liter barrel and also a new 600-liter one, which must be the one that has given it that oak undertone. 1,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2019.

I was surprised when I noticed the vintage of the sharp white 2015 Ribeiras de Armea Branco Lexítimo, as I thought the wine was younger. It does have a leesy and smoky note, as it fermented in a 225-liter oak barrel and was kept with the lees for one year. It was then was racked and kept in stainless steel for a further year, then was bottled in August 2017 and kept in bottle for one year before being released. 2015 was a warm and dry year, and the wine feels riper than the 2017. There was only one barrel, so only 300 bottles exist, making it more of academical interest to know the variety than anything else. I find the oak less noticeable and better integrated than the 2014 I tasted last time, and this feels more balanced and serious, more mineral and less balsamic.

I found a bottle of the 2017 Ribeiras de Armea Agudelo, the varietal Chenin Blanc (locally called Agudelo) that I had already tasted last time. It is very harmonious and balanced and is evolving slowly and showing varietal character in the shape of pollen, beeswax, honeycomb and apples. It has 13.5% alcohol and a lively palate. It has old-vine intensity and a cool-climate, austere and somewhat mineral mouthfeel. It's worth writing the feelings when you bump into a wine of which only 300 bottles were produced.

There are very primary and somewhat rustic Mencía notes in the nose of the red 2018 Ribeiras de Armea Mencía, which also contains some 5% other grapes, red and white, as it's from an old field blend. It's leafy and has some balsamic aromas, a honeyed tone and a vibrant palate with some citrus undertones and wild cherry flavors. It's medium-bodied, has 12.4% alcohol and a dry finish. This would be very good with food. Only 50% matured in barrel, but the oak is nicely integrated. 1,300 bottles produced.
